Theatro Municipal

The theatrical activity was in the second half of the nineteenth century, very intense in Rio de Janeiro. But then the capital of Brazil was not a theater that fully corresponds to this activity and were up to the main city. His two greatest, the St. Peter and the Lyric, were criticized for their facilities, either by the public, either by companies that operated them.

In 1894, playwright Arthur Azevedo launched a campaign for a theater that was built to be the site of a municipal corporation, to be created in the mold of the Comdie Franaise. But the campaign resulted only in a Municipal Law, which led to the construction of the Municipal Theater. The law, however, was not met, despite the existence of a fee to fund the work. The collection of this new tax was never used for the construction of the Theater.

Only in 1903, the mayor Pereira Passos, appointed by President Rodrigues Alves, took up the idea, and the October 15, 1903, launched a tender with a tender for the presentation of projects for the construction of the Municipal Theater.

Terminated the period of the competition in March 1904, seven projects were received. The top two teams are tied: the "Aquila", pseudonym of the engineer Francisco de Oliveira Passos, and the "Isadora", pseudonym of French architect Albert Guilbert, vice-president of the French Association of Architects.

The result of this competition was the reason for a long controversy at City Hall, accompanied by the leading newspapers of the time, around the true authorship of "Aquila" project - which is done by the said section architecture of City Hall - and the alleged favoritism de Oliveira Passos , by the fact of being the son of the mayor, among other arguments.
