In the exhibition “Above and Below,” Derek Root continues to expand his language of abstraction, presenting a series of acrylic-on-canvas works. The paintings depict seemingly random forms that sit harmoniously together, tethered by their subtle texture and colour.

The way we view Root’s forms is interpreted depending on perspective; interchangeably they reference microscopic shapes and colossal, celestial visions from space. The compositions also echo the order of an archeological display, a hint of artifacts arranged in an exhibit. The title of the exhibition calls attention to these and other possible perspectives, challenging the viewer to decide from where they view the works.
